Ex-KGB agent Vladimir Putin may well be favourite to become the new Russian President.
However, his main opponent, Communist Party chief Gennady Zyuganov, was still confident that he would win the support of many Russians as voting continued across the new democracy on Sunday.
The majority of Russians are fed up with a decade of tumult and economic decline and believe Putin's tough stance makes him the best candidate for the job of President.
But Zyuganov is still expected to draw at least twenty percent of the vote.
The Communist Party chief was out early on Sunday as he posted his vote at a polling station in central Moscow.
Zyuganov has vowed to rid the country of what he called a decade of "bandit-criminal" capitalism.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
"I am sure that many support renewal of the situation (in the country) because we have to move away from the nightmare of this decade, crime and bandit capitalism, and confidently develop and recreate our country."
SUPER CAPTION: Gennady Zyuganov, Communist Party Chief
Zyuganov has been in this position before.
In 1996 he faced the then President Boris Yeltsin a second round run-off for the president.
