Russia's Communist Party boss Gennady Zyuganov has received the official go-ahead from Russian election officials to run for the presidency.
Zyuganov is the first contender to register with the Central Election Committee.
The Presidential elections are scheduled for March 26.
It was a unanimous vote as Russian officials registered the first candidate for next month's presidential elections.
Communist Party Leader Gennady Zyuganov is one of the two front-runners in the presidential race.
Recent polls show him trailing far behind Acting President Vladimir Putin, though he is expected to outpace other candidates.
Polls show Zyuganov has a support base of about 25 per cent of the population.
Putin has an approval rating higher than 50 per cent.
Zyuganov, who lost the 1996 presidential elections to incumbent Boris Yeltsin, is well aware of the bridge he needs to gap.

"We are competing with the party of power. (That party) has the media, all sources of income, all property, all figures of authority under its thumb. But our party has effectively competed with the party of power in the governors' races, and in the Duma elections. In terms of intellectual competition, our party platform has laid out a detailed plan for bringing the country out of the crisis it is in, moreover peacefully, democratically and honourably."

"I am sure that our prospects are good in the upcoming elections. The media is wrong to say that there are no other alternatives. Why are there no alternatives? The team that has been working for the last half year has not proposed any real solutions to the country's problems. If we are talking about Chechnya, that there is nothing left in Chechnya. There were 120-thousand people, now there are 200-thousand."

Twenty-nine people have announced their intention to run.
Prominent candidates include Grigory Yavlinsky, the leader of the liberal Yabloko party, and ultranationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky, but no one is expected to be a major challenge to Putin or Zyuganov.
Vladimir Putin, the current acting president, is set to register his candidacy on February 12.
