Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov told reporters on Friday
(28/6) that he would not be surprised to hear that Russian
President Boris Yeltsin was again having serious health problems.
Zyuganov is Yeltsin's rival in the presidential election runoff
vote on July 3 and has been trailing the incumbent in most opinion
polls.
Yeltsin did not appear as scheduled Friday at a conference of
agricultural workers in the Kremlin. Prime Minister Viktor
Chernomyrdin took his place and said Yeltsin was suffering from a
sore throat.
Zyuganov said at a news conference: "I've said for a long time
that his (Yeltsin's) health isn't good, that it cannot be good
after he spent almost five months in the hospital during the last
year. You know very well that after that, he cannot have very good
health, especially at that age."
The Communist candidate, much younger than Yeltsin, added: "The
leader of a country absolutely must be smart, sober and able to
work."
