Improvisation: It’s easy to play a lot of notes, but more difficult to make them tell a story…

So, sometimes I like to improvise starting with a simple question-and-answer structure.

The first musical phrase is a ‘question’—ending on an unresolved note, and the second phrase is an ‘answer’—ending on a resolved note. This play continues back and forth until ending with an ‘answer’ phrase that feels even more definitive and ties the whole line together.
