Enzo Maresca Reacts to Chelsea's 1-2 Loss to Atalanta ⚽

Post-match press conference with Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca after their 2-1 defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League league phase at the New Balance Arena in Bergamo. João Pedro gave Chelsea a first half lead from a Reece James short corner, before Gianluca Scamacca’s header and a late Charles De Ketelaere strike completed the comeback for Atalanta.

Maresca admits Chelsea lost control of the game after conceding the equaliser and repeats his frustration at “two easy goals” that he believes were avoidable. He explains his half time substitutions, taking off Trevoh Chalobah and Enzo Fernández to manage minutes and protect a yellow card, and says that despite five changes from the Bournemouth game there were still eight or nine of the usual starters on the pitch.

He gives an update on Wesley Fofana’s eye injury, saying the defender is struggling to see but he hopes to have him available for Saturday, and accepts that Chelsea now probably have to win both remaining league phase fixtures to reach the top eight and avoid a February play off, otherwise they will have to go through the knockout play off to reach the next round. He also praises Atalanta’s clear identity and aggression and insists the focus must now quickly turn to the next home game.
