Dr. Klimas explains that ME/CFS often begins with an acute infection, such as the Epstein-Barr virus or COVID-19.

Normally, the immune system shuts down after clearing an infection. But in ME/CFS, something causes it to stay activated. This chronic immune activation can exhaust the immune system and lead to various health problems.
