Russia - Reactions To Yeltsin's Plans To Unite

Russian politicians across the political spectrum reacted in
different ways to Boris Yeltsin's announcement on Saturday (11/5)
that he would join forces with leading reformer Grigory Yavlinsky,
some denying any such deal had been struck.

MOSCOW, RUSSIA 11/5:

SOT Gennady Zyuganov (Russian): "First of all, we need to hear
this from Yavlinsky himself. Secondly, this doesn't surprise me.
They come from the same basket, the same harvest and that they
would join up before the elections, this we expected. Although it
does not improve Yavlinsky's prospects at all."

SOT Vladimir Lukin (English): "To the best of my knowledge, there
is nothing like an agreement. There were consultations and there
is a possibility, and there will be a next round of consultations."

SOT Lukin (English): "I know the president for a long time and one
of the main characteristics of the president is somehow to run
ahead of reality."
