I thought it was just a marketing ploy, where the YSL marketing team awkwardly attached the name of their classic red velvet jacket to this perfume. It was hard to associate the bright white flowers and white tea with red velvet until the emergence of patchouli and vetiver... Upon initial application, I was bombarded with an abundance of white flowers. The dangerous jasmine almost triggered an indole alarm. Thankfully, just before I was about to give up, the powderiness of iris and the clarity of white tea held the indolic aspect of jasmine in check. When rose joined the composition, it even sweetened the blend with jasmine, and for a moment, I thought I smelled lily of the valley, reminiscent of Crabtree & Evelyn's Lily of the Valley fragrance. Although lily of the valley was not mentioned, the combination of jasmine, rose, and musk immediately made me think of that perfume called "Lily of the Valley." That's why I initially thought it was a haphazard naming choice, combining an array of white flowers and sweet rose. Where was the red velvet? To me, red velvet has two meanings: one is a soft and noble fabric with a deep and mysterious aura, and the other is an incredibly sweet cake. It wasn't until the emergence of patchouli and vetiver that the situation took a U-turn. My nose couldn't detect the typical dirtiness and earthiness associated with these two notes. It didn't go to the medicinal way either. These two scents seemed to be serving as a solid backbone, supporting the rose and providing depth and richness to the fragrance. I have to admit that while I like this perfume, it's a bit too sweet for me. It reminds me of the sweetness of Ellie Saab's Essence No. 1 Rose, but not as sweet as Xerjoff's Accento Overdose. If you remove the rose, it's like sipping on a cup of sweet jasmine tea at Maokong. I would still wear it, but probably only when I'm in the mood to be more showy than wanting to wear Much Ado About The Duke by Penhaligon's or when I want to reminisce about Hedwig & the Angry Inch. If I wear it with dull ordinary outfit, it might come across as just another popular female-targeted fragrance found in shopping malls.
