So if you want to download and back up all of the photos and videos you have in Google Photos straight onto your computer, here’s exactly how to do it — and it’ll also work if you want to move them to a hard drive after.

You’ll now be on the Google Takeout page. First, click Deselect all, then scroll down until you find Google Photos, and select that one. If you only want certain albums, you can choose them here — otherwise just leave it as all photos included.

It can take a while depending on how many photos you have, but once it’s ready, you’ll get an email with a download link. Click that, and it’ll download all of your photos to your computer.

You’ll also notice a bunch of files ending in .json. These aren’t photos — they’re just metadata and thumbnails. To remove them, type json in the search bar, select all, and delete them. That’ll clean up your folder so it’s only photos and videos.

If you see a folder called “failed videos,” those are files that didn’t fully download. To fix them, open one of those, copy the file name, then go to photos.google.com and paste it in the search bar. Find the correct video, click the three dots, and download it manually. You can then move that into your backup folder.

And if you want to move your backup to an external hard drive, just plug it in and drag your “Google Photos” folder onto it — that’s it.
