About this video
This video showcases the harvesting process of winter spinach in an open-air planting base. The harvesters sit on small stools, holding specially-made harvesting sickles, and work their way along the ridges. They make precise cuts right at the base of each spinach plant, cleanly severing the leafy greens that boast lush, unfurled leaves and intact roots in one swift motion. The harvested spinach is quickly bundled into small sheaves by the workers, who pick out any yellowed or frost-damaged leaves before neatly stacking the bundles in turnover baskets placed beside the ridges.
These spinach plants are selected high-quality varieties that are cold-resistant and bolting-tolerant. Sown in late autumn, the crop is cultivated using a combination of plastic film mulching and drip irrigation for moisture retention. Tempered by the low temperatures of winter, the spinach develops thick, emerald-green leaves with a crisp, sweet taste. Rich in dietary fiber and various trace elements, it is a highly sought-after vegetable in the winter market.
Once all the spinach in the ridges has been harvested, the turnover baskets are transported to an open area at the edge of the field. Working in pairs, the workers carefully load the sorted spinach bundles into the cargo hold of a large truck parked nearby. The floor of the truck bed is pre-lined with thermal quilts to prevent the spinach from freezing during transportation. In the end, part of this freshly harvested winter spinach is directly shipped to fresh produce wholesale markets in surrounding cities via the large truck, while the rest is sent to cold chain warehouses for processing and packaging, to be supplied to chain supermarkets and fresh produce e-commerce platforms.
