Scampton Church and RAF Scampton Children's Remembrance Arts and History Project
The children will hear of the history of RAF Scampton and the sacrifices made by previous generations which enable them to live in a free and democratic country. This history will be delivered by Squadron Leader Mark Discombe (spitfire pilot and officer commanding the BBMF) and Ray Bainborough (chairman of the Lincolnshire Lancaster Association).
Then, under the guidance of the commemorative window designer Claire Williamson, the children will individually design, and make a glazed tile based on their understanding of what 'remembrance' means to them. The tiles will be formed into framed collages and displayed at the special remembrance service, then presented to RAF Scampton, The Red Arrows, each school, and Scampton Church.
We thought that this would be especially significant in bringing the children together on a project, following the covid-19 lock downs.
The collages will be displayed at the Remembrance Service at Scampton Church on the 14th November 2021 and also at The RAF Scampton Heritage Centre on 11th November 2021 (Remembrance Day) when all 200 children, staff, parents and carers will take part in a remembrance service in 617 squadron hanger.
