Hello and a warm welcome to the live coverage of Day 2 of the 5th and final Test of this series between Australia and England all the way from the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). Itβs bright and sunny this morning at the SCG. The players are out on the field going through their warm-up routines. All signs point towards play starting on time today as scheduled.
Rain had the final say yesterday as only 45 overs were possible on Day 1.
After winning the toss and opting to bat England found themselves in early trouble at 57/3 before Lunch. Mitchell Starc Michael Neser and Scott Boland struck early each picking up a wicket to leave the top order dismantled. Australiaβs all-pace attack made good use of the conditions in the morning session and kept England firmly on the back foot early on.
However the two Yorkshiremen then turned the tide with a brilliant counter-attack on a surface that offered very little assistance to the bowlers. In a historic Test where Australia fielded an XI at the SCG without a specialist spinner for the first time in 138 years Joe Root and Harry Brook took full control. The duo added an unbeaten 154-run partnership off 193 balls for the fourth wicket dominating the afternoon session and shifting momentum firmly Englandβs way. Root remained unbeaten on 72 showing his class and composure while Brook matched him stroke for stroke ending the day on 78 not out.
The day was eventually cut short due to worsening light conditions followed by a heavy afternoon thunderstorm. Play was officially abandoned shortly after the Tea interval as the weather refused to relent. England finished Day 1 in a strong position at 211/3 from just 45 overs. With significant time lost yesterday play is scheduled to begin 30 minutes early today. Just 45 overs of play were possible on the opening day of the New Year's Test in Sydney!
Low light & lightning forced the match officials to take an early tea before the relentless rain then forced an abrupt end to the day's play! Earlier in the day England won the toss and opted to bat first. Both teams made a change each. Matthew Potts replaced Gus Atkinson for the visitors while the Aussies stepped onto the field without a spinner for the first time at SCG in Tests since 1888. Ashes 2026 Live Today. Iqbal Sports. Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley got the English side to a decent start adding 35 runs for the opening wicket with the former being the aggressor. However Mitchell Starc found Duckett wanting yet again dismissing him for the 5th time in this series and drawing the first blood for Australia. Soon Michael Neser and Scott Boland joined the party removing Crawley and Jacob Bethell in quick succession leaving England at 57/3.
Since then it has been completely dominated by England until the rain came in. Joe Root (72* off 103 balls) and Harry Brook (78* off 102 balls) rebuild with a quality and positive 154-run fourth wicket partnership to put the Ben Stokes-led side in a strong position taking the team's score to 211/3. Australia have used all five seamers with the frontline.
Cameron Green was expensive and has bowled slightly all over the place. Beau Webster has bowled only two overs and has gone for a considerable amount of runs. The hosts were lacking some game plan with the two half-centurions cruising towards their respective triple-figure mark.
