Chinese military research ship 600NM from Sri Lanka

China is world’s largest navy in terms of warship operated by the country. The vast naval fleet has helped the dragon to project its power beyond its territorial boundary to South China Sea and now its lurking into the Indian Ocean. Recently one of the Chinese research vessel Yuan Wang 5 has been quite in news as it was planning to dock itself at Hambantota port in Sri Lanka from 11th to 17th of August. Hambantota port has been leased to China by the Island country for 99 years after the Sri Lankan government failed to repay its debt. The Chinese research vessel was slated to reach Hambantota port on Thursday. However, it has slowed down its voyage after Colombo withdrew its berthing permission following India questioning the real intent of the Chinese military research vessel.

What’s the intent of China?

The question is which satellite or rocket launch China is tracking from Indian Ocean? On 1st of August, the world has witnessed the fiasco of Chinese most powerful rocket, Long March 5B which crashed after tumbling uncontrollably in space in Indian Ocean near Philippines. The Chinese Space Agency failed even to provide the Philippine Space Agency with information on the rocket debris. What was their most sophisticated military research ship was doing? At present they have no business in Indian Ocean and no satellites or rockets to track. China has failed to justify its presence close to Indian shores.

As per Damien Symon, the Chinese military research ship appears to be holding or running a mission close to 600 Nautical miles from Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean as it awaits berthing permission in Hambantota after objections by India. Meanwhile, Chinese social media platforms are buzzing with anti-Lanka sentiments as a fallout and Chinese supermarkets has deferred the purchase of Sri Lankan goods.

Yuan Wang 5

Yuan Wang 5 is the third generation tracking ship of Yuan Wang series and entered service on 29 September 2007. It is a dual use spy and survey vessel which can track and support satellites and intercontinental ballistic missiles by the People's Liberation Army Strategic Support Force (SSF) of China. The SSF of China focuses on space, cyber & electronic warfare. It features sophisticated missile range instruments, top-of-the-line antennas and radars & many other electronic equipment. It has state-of-the-art tracking technology onboard for transoceanic aerospace observation. Tracking vessel which is part of SSF calls for careful analysis. The Chinese spy vessel is fitted with multi-spectral surveillance capabilities and eves dropping devices.

The mission of this spy vessel was to conduct space tracking, satellite control and research tracking in the north-western part of the Indian Ocean region through August and September. The vessel is docking close to Indian shores at a time when India & China relationship is unsettled at LAC.

Why it is a security threat for India

The Hambantota port of Sri Lanka is located less than 160kms from mainland of India which has raised strategic worry for the country. The aerial range of the Chinese spy vessel is in excess of 750 km, which means, from Hambantota, it can easily spy on Indian vessels, ports of southern states till the ISRO satellite base at Sriharikota. It can also snoop on the Kudankulam Nuclear Power plant & the atomic energy plant at Kalpakkam, the six naval ports across Southern India and also the southern naval command at Kochi. The presence of the Chinese research ship is a considerable security threat which requires India to be proactive in identifying presence of this kind of vessels as the permission was granted by Sri Lanka almost a month back to the Chinese Vessel.
