The city had become a major base for insurgents — packed with snipers, IEDs, and hidden fighters. It was one of the most fortified urban zones since Vietnam. Thousands of Marines, US Navy SEALs and Army units moved in, backed by tanks, artillery, and airstrikes. The fighting was brutal and slow. House-to-house, room-by-room, they cleared the city. Drones, F-16s and AC-130 gunships gave support from the air, while Snipers were placed on rooftops to cover the advancing troops. Entire neighborhoods were flattened. The insurgents fought back hard — hiding in tunnels, using civilians as shields, and setting ambushes inside homes. Almost every building had to be searched, sometimes under fire. U.S. troops called it “fighting in a maze of death.” By the end of the month, the city was in ruins. Over 80 U.S. soldiers were killed and more than 600 wounded. U.S. forces took the city — but the city had been brutally destroyed in the process.
