Fallujah, 40 miles (64 kilometres) west of Baghdad, was the centrepiece of the Sunni Muslim insurgency that had stymied U.S. efforts to secure Iraq. Most of Fallujah’s 200,000 to 300,000 residents fled the city before the U.S. assault.
