Vancouver Homeless Crisis 2025 Downtown Eastside Tents, Empty Units & 5,232 Left in the Cold
Winter 2025, Vancouver is still sold as one of “the world’s most livable cities” but in a single night, 5,232 people across Metro Vancouver were counted as homeless, and roughly 30% of them were sleeping completely outside. In the City of Vancouver alone, about 2,715 people are trying to survive in tents, shelters, SROs or cars, often just a few meters away from multi-million-dollar condos and one-bedroom units renting for over $2,000 a month. Sidewalks in the Downtown Eastside, CRAB Park, spaces under the Oak Street Bridge and along the port have become the front line of the Vancouver homeless crisis 2025. While encampments are fenced off and tent cities are cleared, dozens of publicly funded “supportive housing” and social housing units sit empty, waiting on paperwork and politics while real people freeze in the rain below their dark windows.
In this episode of Homeless Life Stories Vancouver, we walk through Downtown Eastside tents, encampment clearings at CRAB Park, highway underpasses and SkyTrain stations to hear from people who built this city but can no longer afford to live in it. We look at why unsheltered homelessness is rising, how gentrification and social-housing policy are reshaping the DTES, and what community groups, churches and volunteers are doing to keep people alive when the system stalls.
If you believe Vancouver can be more than a postcard city and that 5,232 people left in the cold should never be “normal” please watch until the end, hit like, leave a comment, and subscribe to Homeless Life Stories so these voices aren’t buried under another layer of winter fog.
