About this video:
In this episode of Igniting Inspiration, we are highlighting Michelle Fischer and the Jan Richardson framework she uses to teach guided reading. Michelle is a 5th grade teacher at Irving Elementary. The video opens up with Irving’s Literacy Coach, Courtney O’Connor, sharing how the Jan Richardson framework will help teachers improve their reading instruction. It then shows Michelle Fischer reflecting on how this framework has helped her guided reading instruction become more focused and teach student's comprehension strategies in a systematic way supporting best practices in reading.
In the video, it shares snapshots of the structural pieces to the Jan Richardson Fluent Guided Reading lesson:
-Introducing a new book and strategy
-Teaching new vocabulary
-Reading and Responding with prompting
-Planning for writing
-Writing response after reading
In order for students to learn how to infer, question, analyze or synthesize a text, they need to be taught strategies to build automaticity in these skills when reading. By using Jan Richardson’s scaffolded steps and procedures for teaching comprehension, students are learning how to analyze a character through The Who-What-Why strategy. Students spend the majority of their time reading and Michelle prompting for further understanding of the text. This allows her to gauge student understanding of and the application of the strategy being taught. The organization and sequence provided through the Jan Richardson framework keeps students engaged and immersed in reading and writing.
Thank you Michelle for inviting us into your classroom for a guided reading lesson! Your students are learning the skills they need to become lifelong readers and writers because of your intentional planning and thoughtful discussions and prompting.
