Understanding Postnasal Drip: The Role of Accessory Ostium in Mucus Circulation

One of the causes of postnasal drip is accessory ostium. Secretions from the natural drainage tracts of the sinuses (natural ostium) can return into the sinus through the accessory ostium. In some patients, this circulaion can lead to mucosal disorders, sinus problems, postnasal drip and other complaints over the years. Some of the accessory ostiums can be seen directly during endoscopic nasal examination; some of them can be detected on tomographs and some of them can only be detected during the operation. There are also patients who have accessory ostium but without any problem. We determine these with endoscopic follow-ups, treatments and the patient's clinic. In this video, Dr Atilla Şengör shows the circulation of mucus secretion through the accessory ostium as a cause of postnasal drip with an example case.
