What is Kerberos?
Kerberos is a network authentication protocol that works on the basis of tickets to allow nodes communicating over a non-secure network to prove their identity to one another in a secure manner.

Version of Kerberos Protocols: There are two different version of kerberos protocol- Kerberos Version 4 and Kerberos Version 5

Why Kerberos version 5? (Limitation of Kerberos Version 4)
To overcome limitation of Kerberos Version 4 in two different areas:
Environmental Shortcomings:Encryption System Dependence, Internet Protocol Dependence, Ticket Lifetime, Authentication Forwarding, Inter Realm Authentication.
Technical Deficiencies: PCBC Encryption, Session Keys, Password attack.

Kerberos Version 5 Message Exchange
Client will authenticates itself to the authentication server. Authentication Server (AS) provides ticket of TGS (Ticket Granting server). Client access TGS and request for the Server Ticket. TGS provides Ticket of Server and also provide session key, which is used for communication between server and client.
