Uncovering the NSA's Secret DES Modifications: How Spy Agencies Shape Encryption 🔍

Spy Agencies like the NSA and CIA have a complicated relationship with the cyber security community. On the one hand, it's their job to be experts in cyber security and cryptography; they have a huge budget and pump out a lot of good research. On the other hand, their goals do not always align with the rest of the world. This series of videos discusses the top impacts that spy agencies have had on cryptography (good and bad). This video is generally positive, but to be clear as part of the NSA's work with IBM they reduced the key size of DES making it less secure, and DID NOT tell the rest of the cyber security community about this critical new code brekaing method they found. Organizations could have been using encryption that was weak against differential cryptanalysis without ever knowing the risk.
