About this video
(20 Jun 2019) President Donald Trump welcomed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to the White House Thursday as the two leaders work to get a replacement for the North American Free Trade Agreement over the finish line.
At Trump's insistence, the U.S., Canada and Mexico agreed to an update of the 25-year-old agreement. Trump told reporters the USMCA trade deal is the "largest trade deal by far ever entered into," and he said it's close to being finalized.
Mexico this week became the first of the three nations to ratify the agreement.
In the end, it comes down to whether House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., will bring the bill to a vote. She insists that changes are needed to generate Democratic support, and has appointed a working group to meet with United States Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer on changes that would ease Democratic lawmakers' concerns.
Trump also said during the meeting that he is willing to intervene on Canada's behalf and bring up the plight of two Canadians held in China when he meets with Chinese President Xi Jinping next week.
Responding to a reporter question, Trump said, "I would, at Justin's request. I will absolutely bring it up."
Trump then added "anything I can do to help Canada I will be doing."
Beijing detained ex-diplomat Michael Kovrig and entrepreneur Michael Spavor in an apparent attempt to pressure Canada to release a top executive at Chinese tech giant Huawei. She was arrested Dec. 1 at the request of U.S. authorities who want her to face fraud charges.
