Norte Chico: Ancient Peruvian Civilization 🌅

Norte Chico, also known as Caral-Supe, is one of the earliest known civilizations in the Americas, flourishing along the arid coast of Peru between about 3000 and 1800 BCE. What makes Norte Chico remarkable is that it emerged at nearly the same time as ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, but developed with unique features. The society built massive platform mounds, sunken plazas, and complex architectural layouts without the use of ceramics or widespread art. Instead, their identity seems tied to monumental construction and communal labor, making them a "city-building" culture long before most of the Americas had anything comparable.
Unlike Mesopotamia or Egypt, Norte Chico was not built on grain agriculture but on cotton and fishing. Cotton allowed for the creation of fishing nets, which tied inland agriculture to the rich Pacific fisheries, creating a powerful economic base. This suggests a civilization founded not just on farming but on a maritime-agricultural partnership.
