Indian Professor Turns Coconut Leaves into Eco Straws 🌿

Sunbird Straws is a Made-in-India innovation transforming fallen coconut leaves into biodegradable straws. Founded by Bengaluru’s Christ University professor Saji Varghese along with his former students, this eco-friendly startup is tackling plastic pollution while empowering rural women across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
With tens of thousands of straws produced daily, Sunbird Straws supplies to hotels, cafes and more in India and exports to over 10 countries.
This creates a three-fold sustainable impact by reducing plastic use, preventing leaf burning, and creating livelihoods.
Sunbird Straws was also incubated at NSRCEL IIM-B under the Impact Orbit Program. They helped Sunbird Straws come up with a brand strategy that is enabling them to become a global brand.
