On May 10, 1940, Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands. As German troops closed in on The Hague, Queen Wilhelmina fled the capital and boarded HMS Hereward, a British destroyer sent by King George VI. She had hoped to reach the Dutch province of Zeeland, but German advances forced the crew to change course. On May 13, they reached Britain, but only after a close call.
