About this video

Tascam Portastudio 414 MkII 4 track cassette tape recorder demo. Here's how to use this tape machine, which was made at the height of cassette advancements. In this video demo, I'm recording acoustic guitar(rhythm) and an electric guitar solo.

On this four track tape recorder, drum tracks are on one and two- panned somewhat wide, and the guitar tracks are numbers three and four. Rhythm guitar is panned a bit left, and the solo a bit to the right.

This cassette tape machine is remarkably easy to use, and the sound quality is truly superb... To hear the full recording scroll ahead to approx 3m:30s

The Microphone is a cascade fathead ribbon mic. It works perfectly with the onboard mic preamplifiers. The guitars used are Yamaha FG 160 and Ibanez AF75.

The tape used is a Maxell XLII, type 2 high bias tape. It was mixed down to a 44.1khz, 16 bit wave file, which is what you hear at the end of the recording.

NOTES:
I turn the treble up about 3db, (a slightly noticable amout)on many tracks when recording, so the sound is captured to tape in a crisp, brilliant way.

When using the fathead ribbon, I really crank the treble, since the mic is a bit dark and I don't have to worry about it becoming sibilant. Feel it out. If it starts sounding too trebly, back off the treble knob a bit.

The electric guitar is recorded wet with effects directly onto track four via the line in for that channel. I prefer to record guitar sounds wet, since it usually holds the vibe I'm feeling during the recording of the song.

The song is an original tune of my own. I hope you enjoy it, and I truly hope this video is helpful to you! If so, please like / share / help me keep making interesting videos!
