Prior to this video, I recorded drums onto tracks 1 and 2 as a stereo pair, panned slightly to the left or right. I could have recorded drums mono to one track, but I thought it sounded better panned over two channels. The drums sound punchy, warm and fat- just what I'd hope to get from drums on tape.
The rhythm track is acoustic guitar, on track #3. The preamp level was set to make sure the guitar sound didn't distort when playing loudly.
The same is true for the guitar solo, track 4. Set the level so the input meter doesn't stay pegged in the red zone. This way, you'll get a good sound (level) and it will be clear in the mix.
As you can see in the video, I used the on-board mic preamps, However you could use better ones if you have them. The stock ones sound just fine, but the sky is the limit with Mic preamplifiers. It's worth noting that I used a modern ribbon mic (one with neodymium magnets) to record the guitar in this video. It had plenty of output for the stock mic preamps.
All of the audio except for the mixdown section, which is run directly out of the Stereo line outs into my soundcard, is recorded at 24 bit, 96k.
This song is recorded to a Maxell XLII cassette tape, type II. The DBX was turned "on" in this video.
