Relegated to the outskirts between the working-class district of Yopougon and the Banco rainforest, the Abidjan Prison and Correctional Facility (MACA) lies hidden from view, in the shadows of the Ivorian capital. Built following a European model in the 1970s, this penitentiary institution, the largest in Côte d’Ivoire, houses up to 5,000 inmates, despite an original capacity of 1,500. Yet, daily life is organized, and a certain stability prevails within MACA. Through portraits of guards and inmates from different prison departments, this documentary offers the first deep dive into the heart of a system of conflicting solidarities.
