Pakistan Bans TLP Under Anti-Terror Law After Cabinet Approval 🚫

About this video

In a significant political and legal development, the Government of Pakistan has officially banned Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) after approving a summary presented by the federal cabinet. The Ministry of Interior issued a formal notification confirming that the religious political party has been placed in the list of proscribed organizations under the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.

According to the notification, the federal government possesses credible evidence indicating that TLP has been involved in violent protests and activities that threaten national security and public order. The notification declares that such acts fall under the category of terrorism as defined by Pakistani law.

Following the cabinet’s decision, the Interior Ministry sent the ban notification to all relevant institutions including the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), all provincial governments, and TLP’s central leadership. This effectively suspends the party’s political and electoral activities pending further legal procedures.

The Ministry of Law has also begun the necessary legal process to formalize the ban. After consultation with the Attorney General of Pakistan, a reference will be filed in the Supreme Court. The apex court will then examine the evidence presented, similar to a criminal trial, before delivering a final judgment on whether the ban should remain in effect.

Constitutionally, the government’s action falls under Article 17(2) of the Constitution of Pakistan, which allows the state to restrict or ban a political party if it is found working against the sovereignty, integrity, or security of the country. However, such a ban becomes effective only after the Supreme Court upholds it. The government must send the reference to the Court within 15 days of announcing the ban.

Sources confirmed that the Punjab Cabinet had already approved a proposal to outlaw TLP and forwarded its recommendation to the federal government earlier this week. The decision came after a series of violent demonstrations allegedly led by TLP activists that disrupted public life, damaged property, and clashed with law enforcement agencies.

The ban on TLP has sparked widespread discussion in political circles and among citizens. Supporters of the decision argue that it was necessary to restore peace, prevent violent extremism, and protect national security. Critics, however, urge the government to ensure due legal process and transparency to avoid any perception of political victimization.

This move marks a defining moment in Pakistan’s approach toward managing extremist elements within its political spectrum. The final decision now rests with the Supreme Court of Pakistan, which will determine whether the government’s action aligns with constitutional and legal principles.

As the country awaits the Court’s verdict, the ban on TLP serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between freedom of political expression and state responsibility to maintain public order and national stability.
