About this video
Cryptography: Adventures in Best Practices and Hazardous Materials, talk by Jonathan Street for DC Python at Spaces in Rosslyn, VA on 04-23-2019.
Cryptography is a vital and often invisible component in our lives. It helps us prove our identities, establish trust, and keep information secure. Although always important, often the best approach is handling cryptography outside our programs. HTTPS/TLS might be handled by the web server rather than our application and valuable analyses might be best secured using whole disk encryption. However, sometimes we must handle the cryptography ourselves. Fortunately, "There's a Package for That".
In this talk, Jonathan will demonstrate best practices for several different situations and review how easy the cryptography package makes implementing these. Finally, he will dive into the "hazardous materials" for when best practices don't quite fit our objective.
Meet Your Presenter:
Jonathan Street is a biomedical scientist studying kidney disease. He extensively uses python for data analysis and machine learning and has taught these subjects at the Foundation for Advanced Education in the Sciences at NIH. Jonathan is also one of the organizers for the DCPython meetup and has hosted the Project Night event since 2015.
