About this video
Libya is in national mourning following the death of the country's army chief of staff in a plane crash near Ankara, Turkey. General Mohammed Ali Ahmed al-Haddad was travelling on a private jet which went down shortly after take-off on Tuesday night, killing everyone on board, including four senior Libyan military officials and three crew members.
Turkish authorities say the aircraft lost contact around 40 minutes into the flight, with investigators saying early findings point to a technical failure, ruling out sabotage. The Libyan delegation had been in Ankara for talks aimed at strengthening military cooperation between the two countries.
Al-Haddad was one of the most influential military figures in western Libya and a key player in UN-backed efforts to reunify the country after years of division. His death will raise questions about the future of those efforts.
