핑크 플로이드는 1965년 결성되어 1995년 해체된 프로그레시브 록 역사상 가장 성공한 밴드이며, 동시에 록 음악 역사상 3번째로 많은 음반을 판 영국의 전설적인 밴드입니다.
이번에 연주한 곡은 핑크 플로이드의 대표곡으로 1979년 발매된 앨범 The Wall에 수록된 곡이자, The Wall의 타이틀곡으로 '벽'이라는 주제를 통해 세상의 부조리함을 표현한 곡입니다.
이 앨범은 총 세 파트로 나누어져 있고, 보통 각 파트당 하나의 곡으로 취급합니다. 가장 유명한 것은 두 번째 파트 이곡으로, 영국, 미국 등 각종 차트에서 1위를 휩쓸었고, 미국에서 플래티넘 판매고를 올리는 등 크게 히트하였습니다.
곡의 가사 내용은 영국의 획일화된 교육을 날카롭게 비판하는 곡으로, 'We don't need no education, we don't need no thought control'로 시작되는 후렴구는 핑크 플로이드가 누군지 잘 모르는 사람들도 70-80년대를 살았다면 많이 들어 봤을 멜로디입니다. 곡을 작사, 작곡한 보컬겸 베이스 연주자인 '로저 워터스'의 진보주의적 사상이 잘 드러난 곡으로 이 곡 발매 이후 다소 생소한 장르였던 '프로그레시브 록'의 대중적인 인지도를 크게 확보하였으며, 밴드'RUSH'를 비롯한 다른 많은 80-90년대의 프로그레시브 밴드들에게도 영향을 준 명곡으로 평가되고 있습니다.
여담으로 로저 워터스를 제외한 나머지 멤버들은 이 노래를 별로 좋아하지 않다고 하는데요 기존 핑크 플로이드의 음악 스타일에 크게 탈피하는 디스코풍 음악에다가 로저 워터스가 혼자서 처음부터 끝까지 다 만든 노래라서 그렇다네요^^.특히 드럼은 너무너무 단조로운 패턴이라 핑크 플로이드의 화려한 다른 곡에 비해서는 확실히 재미가 없는 건 사실입니다^^::
그럼에도 불구하고 핑크 플로이드의 대표곡이라 라이브 공연 때는 빠지지 않고 연주하는 곡입니다.^^
