About this video

The session will involve a demonstration of one of the techniques in data hiding; namely, least significant bit steganography. We will start by providing the definition of steganography and its uses in non-digital world and proceed with basic data storage on computers (how characters, images, colors are represented on a computer). We will focus on the RGB color scheme and explore how the least significant bits can be used to embed data in a file. We will then use a software (steghide.exe) to embed data in an image and extract the data form the image. Audience will be provided a challenge where they will use the tool to extract the hidden data. At the end of this session the audience will have learned about a fun activity for students through which students can learn about/revise how data is stored on a computer, basics of the binary number system, data hiding techniques in particular using least significant bit steganography, and a simple hands-on tool to demonstrate how steganography works.
