India Meteorological Department (IMD) established in 1875, is completing 150 years of service to the nation on 15th January 2025. IMD is the National Meteorological Service Provider of the country and the Principal Government agency related to Meteorology and allied subjects. Continuing from British era, the Department upheld the task of establishing the weather & climate services in various vital sectors that are propelling the nationโs economic development such as disaster management, agriculture, fisheries, industries, water resources, energy & power, marine, aviation and surface transport in independent India. The efficient utilization of scientific and technological evolution in the form of radar, satellite, high performance computing systems, numerical weather prediction models and rapid communication networks enabled IMD to scale new heights in monitoring & forecasting of weather over the years. IMD has been developing indigenous technology and scientific innovations to deliver very accurate multi โ hazard early warning during all extreme weather & climate events such as tropical cyclone, heat & cold waves, heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. IMD has its vision of delivering seamless weather and climate services to every household by developing all-round capabilities.
