*Story Start*

Flashback Scene

(Scene at Sona's parents' house)

Sona, 24 years old - (spreading out clothes in front of her) Hmm, these two sarees are mother's, two kurtis of mine are worn out, and these are two one-meter pieces of printed fabric. Diwali is coming, so I'm thinking I'll make something out of these, and Mom will be happy.

Narration - Sona was sitting with the clothes spread out in front of her, when her mother came into the room.

Hema, age 50 - (speaking to Sona) Hey Sona, we cleaned up. Do you know where the big kitchen spoon is?

Sona, age 24 - (telling) Yes, Mom, I put the less frequently used utensils in the big box. Take it out.

Hema, age 50 - (smiling) Okay, (asking) Okay, so tell me, what are you doing spreading these clothes out?

Sona, age 24 - (smiling) Mom, nothing. These were just your useless sarees. And I also have some clothes that are worn out, so I was laying them out and thinking, why not sew something out of them for Diwali?

Hema, 50 (smiling) Wow, that's great! Every year, you make something out of these discarded clothes. It's great! If you could sew something, would you mind sewing something?

Narration - Hearing Hema's suggestion, Sona simply smiled and began calculating how to make clothes from the saree and other scraps of fabric.

Sona, 24 (speaking to herself) Mom has worn these sarees a lot, so I'll make something for myself instead of using them for Mom. It would be nice if I sewed something for her from my own clothes.

Narration - With that, Sona cut an Anarkali dress from one of her mother's sarees and fashioned a suit for her mother from her discarded kurtis. Sona knew how to sew. She was a poor girl, so she used this kind of jugaad to make ends meet during festivals. Diwali was still approaching, and for Diwali, Sona hand-stitched an Anarkali dress for herself and a suit for her mother. Once both items were stitched, she added some hand embroidery to them, making the mother-daughter outfits look beautiful. They both wore them on Diwali.

Sona, 24, (showing), "Mom, look, I stitched this dress for myself from your saree. Tell me, how did it look?"

Hema, 50, (smiling) "So beautiful! I always tell you this. You make even old clothes look unrecognizable with your tricks. My daughter is truly very intelligent."

Flashback End

Sona, 24, (speaking to herself), "At her parents' house, my mother used to wear clothes stitched by me. And she was so happy." I used to make clothes for my mother every Diwali, but now I'm married. And I've got an in-law with a big bungalow. I wonder if they'll wear clothes I make.

Narration - Sona was sitting in her in-laws' house, reminiscing about her parents' days. She had all her saris spread out in front of her, reminiscing about the old days. Sona was a poor girl who had married into a big bungalow. She had everything; her in-laws were considered one of the wealthy families in the city. They had servants and there was no shortage of anything. But despite all this, Sona hated extravagance. She was sitting there, spreading out her saris, when her sister-in-law came into the room.

Jyoti, 22, (speaking to herself with a frown) Everyone here at home considers me useless for tiring. I wonder where Sona Bhabhi is. (Going into Sona's room) Sona Bhabhi, are you in the room?
