"Tu lambi race ka ghoda hai, producer ban ja"—these words became a slow poison for the greatest lyricist of Indian cinema, Shailendra. A man who worked as a railway welder while writing revolutionary poems, Shailendra was discovered by Raj Kapoor and went on to write anthems like Awara Hoon, Mera Joota Hai Japani, and Jeena Yahan Marna Yahan.

However, his life took a dark turn when he decided to produce Teesri Kasam, based on Phanishwar Nath Renu's story. Betrayed by his own brother-in-law (who took the unit to a remote village just to be near his lover) and misled by director Basu Bhattacharya, Shailendra fell into a massive debt of ₹23 lakhs. Despite Raj Kapoor working for just ₹1 to save his friend, the film was initially declared a flop. The stress, the insults from moneylenders, and the heartbreak led Shailendra to alcohol and eventually death on December 14, 1966—ironically, his best friend Raj Kapoor’s birthday.

In a cruel twist of fate, just months after his death, Teesri Kasam became a blockbuster and won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film.
