When his van breaks down, he joins a foot expedition to a National Guard depot, returning with military Humvees and massive supplies.
Marcus then leads a two-week expedition to Dallas, discovering a thriving safe zone of 5,000 people. This opens his eyes to a growing network of survivor communities across Texas and beyond, all cooperating through trade and shared knowledge.
Over the following years, Marcus transitions from a lone survivor to a community builder—coordinating logistics between zones, training others, and helping establish trade routes. He marries Sarah, raises Emma, and watches civilization slowly rebuild itself.
Ten years after the outbreak, the infected have degraded and largely disappeared. The network includes 47 functioning zones. Marcus's armored van—his first refuge—is eventually scrapped, its steel reforged into tools for building the new world.
