In New York, the United States' largest city and financial capital, a progressive candidate for mayor has become a political and cultural lightning rod.
Zohran Mamdani is a Ugandan-born, New York-raised Social Democrat, who burst onto the political scene during a time of a global shift rightward.
If elected, he would become the city’s first Muslim mayor - a designation that has prompted both a backlash as well as a groundswell of support.
