About this video

This video tells the story of Operation Red Wings. In June and July of 2005, the U.S. military launched an operation in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, targeting Taliban leader Ahmad Shah and his anti-coalition militia. A four-man Navy SEAL reconnaissance team was deployed but was discovered by local goat herders and subsequently ambushed by Shah’s fighters. During the intense firefight, three SEALs—Lt. Michael Murphy, Danny Dietz, and Matthew Axelson—were killed. A rescue helicopter carrying eight additional SEALs and eight Army Night Stalkers was shot down by a rocket-propelled grenade, resulting in the deaths of all 16 onboard. Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell was the sole survivor, later rescued after being protected by local villagers. The mission, later recounted in Luttrell’s book Lone Survivor, became the deadliest single day for Naval Special Warfare since World War II, claiming the lives of 19 American servicemen.
