About this video
Dr. Bill Wilson, the Executive Director of Nanoscale Systems at Harvard University, explains the fascinating quantum physics phenomenon of quantum entanglement that Einstein called “spooky action at a distance.”
One possible application of quantum mechanics is the potential creation of the quantum internet. The quantum internet is a proposed type of internet that uses quantum mechanics to enable secure communication and advanced computation. It relies on qubits, which can exist in a superposition of both states simultaneously, unlike classical bits. The quantum internet can provide unbreakable encryption through a technique called quantum key distribution (QKD). Quantum teleportation, which involves transmitting the quantum state of one particle to another particle at a distant location, is another potential application of the quantum internet.
While still in its early stages of development, researchers are actively working on building the necessary infrastructure, such as quantum repeaters and quantum memories, to make the quantum internet a reality.
Harvard University CNS is a research laboratory devoted to the support of transformative nanoscience.
Among the world's largest science centers, the Museum of Science engages millions of people each year to the wonders of science and technology through interactive exhibitions, digital programs, giant screen productions, and preK – 8 EiE® STEM curricula through the William and Charlotte Bloomberg Science Education Center. Established in 1830, the Museum is home to such iconic experiences as the Theater of Electricity, the Charles Hayden Planetarium, and the Mugar Omni Theater. Around the world, the Museum is known for digital experiences such as Mission: Mars on Roblox, and traveling exhibitions such as the Science Behind Pixar. Learn more at https://www.mos.org/
