The United States is increasing its naval presence in the West Philippine Sea, with the USS George Washington aircraft carrier conducting patrols to counter rising Chinese aggression in the contested waters. This comes as China continues to rapidly upgrade its naval forces and assert its territorial claims in the Indo-Pacific. In the latest, China's first domestically built aircraft carrier, the Shandong, sailed into Hong Kong on Thursday. Beijing has said the Shandong and its escort vessels, which include the destroyers Zhanjiang and Yanan and the frigate Yuncheng, will visit the Chinese finance hub for five days and host "tours and cultural exchange activities".
