About this video
We are all in the market for savvy savings when it comes to holidays – often spending hours scrolling online to ensure we get the best value for our stint in the sun, or a last-minute city escape or our beach break.
While most holidaymakers might think that the best way to save some precious pounds when organizing for a holiday would be on both flights and hotels, forward planning could come in handy, as new research reveals that booking essential extras early on, such as airport parking, could pay for a UK theatre break or return flights to New York City.
This comes as the average holidaymaker could save £310 per year by being organised with every element of their escape.
Research from Holiday Extras shows that only half of us (49%) book airport parking straight after booking our holiday, with a third (30%) only thinking about it about a month before jetting off and one in ten (10%) admitting to forgetting about it until the week before their flights. Notably, 7% are even paying for their parking at the gate, meaning 1.2m holidaymakers could be saving up £155 per trip2 if they pre-book their airport parking.
By leaving holiday essentials to the last-minute dash to the airport, travelers are at the mercy of inflated last-minute prices. When it comes to families, Dads are the most likely to wait until the last minute to lock in the essential extras - with single people the most likely to book ahead.
Data also indicates the holiday hotspots families are booking for that magical trip abroad this summer. Over a quarter of bookings alone were for Spain (27%), while destinations such as Italy (6%), Portugal (4%), USA (4%) and Greece (3%) feature on people’s itineraries.
