Double digit increase in contact crimes

In the past three months there has been a more than 66-percent increase in murder compared to the same period last year. Police Minister Bheki Cele has presented the crime figures for April through to the end of June this year. In that quarter, over 5,700 people were killed. Over 10,000 people were raped, reflecting an increase of over 70-percent.
