Menstrual pain or dysmenorrhea is a common symptom that most women experience
Symptoms of dysmenorrhea:
Pain in the lower abdomen
Feeling of pressure on the abdomen
Pain in the thighs or lower back and hips
Stomach disorders
Loose stools
Types:
Primary dysmenorrhea:
This is common, frequent menstrual cramps that are not caused by medical conditions.
The pain begins - usually - a day or two before the period, and the pain ranges from moderate to severe,
and lasts between 12 and 72 hours, and may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and fatigue
Secondary dysmenorrhea:
It is the pain caused by a disorder in a woman's reproductive organs,
such as: endometriosis, infection or uterine fibroids .
Pain in secondary dysmenorrhea begins earlier in the menstrual cycle
and lasts longer than common menstrual cramps
Causes of dysmenorrhea:
Menstrual cramps are caused by a chemical called prostaglandin.
If the uterus contracts too hard, it puts pressure on the adjacent blood vessels,
cutting off the oxygen supply to the uterine muscle tissue .
Pain results when part of the muscle briefly loses its oxygen supply
