Qing Wen: Comparing 'Finally' with 终于、总算、毕竟 | Upper Intermediate Chinese Lesson

In the first ever Intermediate/Upper-Intermediate Qing Wen, we tackle the slightly nuanced difference between the characters 终于 (zhong1yu2), 总算 (zong3suan4) and 毕竟 (bi4jing4). They can all translate as 'In the end" or "finally" but have subtle differences in usage. In today's Qing Wen we give you lots of example sentences so that next time you can use the most appropriate word.

Key Vocabulary:
总算、终于 (zǒngsuàn、 zhōngyú) - finally; after all
终于(表示好不容易完成) [zhōngyú( biǎoshì hǎobùróngyì wánchéng)] - finally; at last; in the end; eventually (to show that something has been completed with great difficulty)
总算(表示做完了,松了一口气、不用再担心了) [zǒngsuàn( biǎoshì zuòwán le, sōng le yīkǒuqì、 bùyòng zài dānxīn le)] - finally; at long last (to show that something has been completed, you're relieved and that you don't need to worry about it anymore)
终于(表示并不期望但是必须面对的结果) [zhōngyú( biǎoshì bìngbù to expect dànshì bìxū miànduì de jiéguǒ)] - finally; at last; in the end; eventually (an outcome that you have to face but are not looking forward to)
毕竟 (bìjìng) - after all; all in all; when all is said and done.
