The common hawk-cuckoo (Hierococcyx varius), popularly known as the brainfever bird, is a medium-sized cuckoo resident in the Indian subcontinent. It bears a close resemblance to the Shikra, even in its style of flying and landing on a perch. The resemblance to hawks gives this group the generic name of hawk-cuckoo.
The call of this bird has been popularly transcribed as brain-fever in English.
The brainfever bird's call may be heard all through the day, starting early before dawn and frequently during moonlit nights.

पपीहा जिसे ब्रेनफ़ेवर पक्षी के नाम से जाना जाता है, एक पक्षी है जो दक्षिण एशिया में बहुतायत में पाया जाता है। यह दिखने में शिकरा की तरह होता है। इसके उड़ने और बैठने का तरीका भी बिल्कुल शिकरा जैसा होता है। इसीलिए अंग्रेज़ी में इसको Common Hawk-Cuckoo(हायरोकोकस वेरियस), कहते हैं। यह अपना घोंसला नहीं बनाता है और दूसरे चिड़ियों के घोंसलों में अपने अण्डे देता है।
यह भारतीय उपमहाद्वीप में मध्यम आकार का कोयल है।
इस पक्षी की कॉल को अंग्रेजी में दिमागी बुखार के नाम से जाना जाता है।
ब्रेनफेयर बर्ड की कॉल को दिन भर सुना जा सकता है, सुबह होने से पहले और अक्सर चांदनी रातों के दौरान।
