NewsX : Expedite implementation of Sethusamudram project - DMK

It's a crucial day for the controversial Sethusamudram project. The Supreme Court will today hear the final arguments on the necessity of the Sethusamudram project.

While the DMK is exerting pressure on Centre to implement the project the AIADMK and BJP are opposed to it. The project that aims to shorten the sea route between the eastern and western coasts of India by breaking the Ram Sethu & creating a canal was approved in May 2005 but it soon ran into trouble and dredging work had to be suspended. Not only the Hindu Organisations, certain environmentalists have also questioned viability of the project. Even govt appointed pauchri committee has recommended that the project is not feasable.
