Hollis Frampton - Palindrome (1969)
While working at a photo lab, Frampton discovered that the waste at both ends of processed film rollsâwhere chemicals are appliedâserves as a metaphor for the film's exploration of repetition and reflection, forming the basis of this experimental work.
About this video
https://filmow.com/palindrome-t253269/ While working at a photo lab, Frampton found that the waste at both ends of the rolls of processed filmâwhere chemicals worked on the emulsion through clips used to attach the film to the machineâproduced images far too interesting to be discarded. For Palindrome, Frampton selected images which he described as âtending towards the biomorphic,â resembling abstract surrealist painting. However, the rigid palindromic structure that Frampton imposes on the imagesâa motorized sequence based on âtwelve variations on each of forty congruent phrasesââdeviates from the subjective aesthetic of the expressive, demonstrating Framptonâs interest in the âgenerative powerâ of films composed by rules and principles.
