About this video

You will learn about 3 Types of Rocks in this video. Rocks can be broadly divided into three types on the bases of their formation, namely igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks.\r
\r
Igneous rocks are formed from magma, which is a molten rock found deep inside the earth. This molten magma comes upwards or even erupts from a volcano in the form of lava. When this molten magma cools, it leads to the formation of igneous rocks. Some examples of igneous rocks are granite and pumice.\r
\r
It takes thousands of years for the formation of sedimentary rocks. Natural processes like rain, wind, flowing rivers, etc. carry soil particles, sand, dead plants etc. over mountains, hills and plains and deposit it elsewhere to form layers of sediment. Over time, these layers press over one another to form sedimentary rocks. Some examples of sedimentary rocks are sandstone, coal and limestone.\r
\r
When a rock that is sedimentary or igneous changes its original properties and appearance due to ion of heat and pressure over a period of time, it transforms into a metamorphic rock. For example, limestone, a sedimentary rock, when subjected to high temperatures and pressure, forms a metamorphic rock called marble. Similarly, some other examples of metamorphic rocks are slate and quartzite.\r
