“By” is a single moment in time. It is the last moment you can do something.
“Until” is a duration of time. It is all the time between now and the last moment you can do something.
And now for an example.
A man runs into a hospital and says to the receptionist, “Help, help! I just swallowed some poison! I need to see a doctor.”
And the receptionist say, “Oh, I’m sorry, sir, but there’s been a major catastrophe today, and all of our doctors are busy until tomorrow. But, there is a private clinic around the corner. If you go there you should find a doctor. The only problem is that, because it’s private, you’ll have to pay.”
And the man says, “I don’t care! I’m going to die. I’ll pay anything.”
So he runs to the private clinic and he says to the receptionist, “Help, I need to see a doctor! I’ll pay anything you want!” And he holds out his money and the receptionist says, “Oh, that’s okay, sir, you pay at the end of the consultation. Please fill out this form and I’ll make an appointment for you.”
And the man says, “Well, when can I see the doctor?”
And the receptionist says, “Well, he’s quite busy this morning, he’s busy until this afternoon, but he should be free by four o’clock.”
And the man says, “Four o’clock! But I’ll be dead by three!”
And the receptionist says, “Oh! Well, in that case, please pay now.”

Quelle est la différence entre “by" et “until”?
“By” represente un moment unique dans le temps. C’est le dernier moment, durant lequel on peut faire quelque chose.
“Until" represente une durée de temps. C’est tout le temps entre maintenant et le dernier moment durant lequel on peut faire quelque chose.
Et maintenant, un exemple.
Un homme entre dans un hôpital, et il dit au chef de réception, “Aidez-moi, aidez-moi! J’ai bu du poison! J’ai besoin de voir un médecin!”
Et le chef de réception dit, “Je suis désolé, monsieur, mais il y a eu une catastrophe, et tout les médecins sont occupé jusqu’à demain. Mais il y a une clinique privée près d’ici. Si vous allez là, vous pouvez trouver un médecin. Le seul problème, c’est que la clinique est privée, vous devriez payer.”
Et l’homme dit, “Je m’en fiche! Je vais mourir! Je vais tout payer!
Donc, il court à la clinique privée et il dit au chef de réception, “Aidez-moi! J’ai besoin de voir un médecin! Je payerai tout ce que vous voulez. Et il montre son argent et le chef de réception dit, “Pas du problème, monsieur, vous payerez après la consultation. S'il vous plaît remplissez ce formulaire et j’arrangerai un rendez-vous pour vous.”
Et l’homme dit, “D’accord. Quand est-ce que je peux voir le médecin?”
Et le chef de réception dit, “Il et très occupé ce matin, il est occupé jusqu’a l’après-midi, mais il devrait être disponible à quatre heures.”
Et l’homme dit, “Quatre heures! Mais je serais mort à trois heures!”
Et le chef de réception dit, “Dans ce cas, s’il vous plaît payez maintenant.”
