<br />Susan Sarandon and Kristy McNichol in Women of Valor (1986)<br />During World War II, a group of Australian and U.S. Army nurses in the Philippines are captured and imprisoned by Japanese troops.<br /><br />The story focuses on Lt. Margaret Ann "Maggie" Jessup (American), the head of American and Australian army nurse who survived the Bataan camp and testified against the Japanese. She lobbied for awards of valor to be given to the women prisoners, in front of theย United States Congressional subcommitteeย years later as a colonel.<br /><br />When Bataan and Corregidor fell, 11 navy nurses,ย 66 army nurses, and 1 nurse-anesthetist were captured and imprisoned in and around Manila. They continued to serve as a nursing unit while prisoners of war. After years of hardship, they were finally liberated in February 1945.<br />
